Sing the Songs of Zion: Beauty & Exile
By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion.
On the willows there we hung up our lyres.
For there our captors required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
- Psalm 137:1-3
Our theme this October will center around the singing the songs of Zion and particularly the intersection of beauty and exile. Exile is a major Biblical theme throughout the Bible and we may do well to consider how the New Testament identification of God’s people being exiles can inform and enrich our worship and music. Topics this fall will include topics like Leading Zion's Songs in the Midst of Grief, AI & the Cultural Mandate, Using the Psalms in Liturgy, Trauma and New Creation, Exile and an Apocalyptic Aesthetic, Preaching Before the Lord as a Lead-Worshipper, Music and Loneliness, and A Forum on Inter-Generational Worship.
2023 Events
My Bright Abyss: Paintings & Prints
Thursday, October 12th, at 5:30pm | Opening Reception & Artist Presentation
Liturgy Collective is thrilled to partner with St. George’s to welcome the work of Makoto Fujimura to the Bradford Gallery this fall. In addition to being a contemporary artist whose distinctive “slow art” has been featured in galleries and museums around the world, Fujimura is a speaker, writer, and advocate. Though he once considered these paintings too dark and incomplete for any of his exhibitions; however, he recently discovered a “brightness to their countenance.” The exhibit, titled My Bright Abyss: Paintings and Prints, explores the living hope of Christian faith amongst the darkness and lament that can be found in everyday life: quite literally seeking the light amongst the dark. Join us for the opening reception with a special presentation by the artist. More details at stgeorgesnashville.org/gallery.

At one point, the conference was called a "retreat" and I think that was an apt description. Pastors, music leaders, choir members, and many others gathered to hear great content, have their imaginations sparked anew, and be sent back in to their church contexts revitalized and ready to lead.
